Celtic’s teenage summer signing Jeremie Frimpong pushing for a first-team place insists Neil Lennon.
And the 18-year-old, signed from Manchester City just before the window closed at the start of the month, has wowed his teammates who have been “talking about him” from the minute he walked in the door.
Frimpong impressed on his debut against Partick Thistle, picking up the man of the match award as Celtic ran out 5-0 winners to go through the League Cup semi-final where they will face Hibs.
Neil Lennon said Frimpong had “excited” everyone but said he “didn’t want to get carried away”.
The youngster has also caught the eye of teammates since joining. Last night’s left-back, Jonny Hayes, told Celtic TV: “Since he came in, the first day and first five minutes of his first session we’ve been talking about him.
“He’s obviously impressed all the players and the management as well.
“Exactly what he does in training everyday he’s gone out and done it tonight so I’m delighted for him. He works his socks off in training and he’s got his rewards tonight, starring in a 5-0 win.”
Frimpong was buzzing after the match. He said: “It was amazing being out there in front of these fans. I’m so happy.
“When you make your debut you can’t be shy, you have to go prove yourself and that’s what I did today. I’m grateful.”
Neil Lennon is expecting big things from the versatile defender, but urged a note of caution.
“He is battling for a first-team place already, no question,” Lennon said in the Scotsman.
“You can’t stop the talent at times, as soon as he came in we brought him into first-team training and he has excelled. We are excited about him but we don’t want to get carried away.”
Celtic fans will be looking forward to seeing more of Frimpong, who already looks a fantastic bit of business. Watch his post-match interview below.
