Celtic top table on perfect night that could have final sting in tail for Lazio

Celtic cruised to victory against Rennes with a 3-1 win that saw the club top the group with a game to spare.

The win, coupled with Lazio’s victory over Cluj in Rome, means Celtic are seeded for the next round.

Celtic played some superb stuff on a night that saw a few players rested.

Odsonne Edouard sat the match out, with Lennon raising a few eyebrows by pitching Lewis Morgan in up front.

The former St Mirren man has been a bit part player at Celtic, but his superb near-post finish after getting on the end Forrest’s cross on 21 minutes justified his manager’s confidence in him.

Celtic’s lead was doubled just before half-time as Christie’s shot from outside the box squirmed past Rennes keeper, Mendy.

It was yet another Scot who scored the third when Mikey Johnston picked up where he left off before injury.

The youngster worked a path through the defence with the aid of the excellent Ntcham before firing a low shot into the far corner.

Fraser Forster did his best to keep a clean sheet with an incredible double save, but Rennes did get a consolation in the dying stages as Hunou powered a header home.

Scott Brown, with some effort, managed to pick up a booking, which will see him suspended for the last match against Cluj.

With Celtic on an unassailable 13 points after five games, however, it means Neil Lennon can afford to give an entire second string a run-out in Romania.

Cluj, second on nine points, can’t catch the Hoops. Lazio, meanwhile, will be hoping Celtic do them a favour.

And while it would be tremendous to see a young Celtic second string continue the team’s fine run this season, should they falter it would mean that Lazio would be knocked out.

That won’t come into the players’ or manager’s head, but it would eliminate a potentially dangerous opponent for later in the tournament, should Celtic continue to progress.
