Frank McGarvey reckons Leigh Griffiths can bounce back to claim a starting place at Celtic.
The former Hoops star, who was a fans’ favourite in the early 80s, believes that Griffiths can put his troubles behind him to star for Celtic and Scotland once again.
Griffiths has battled personal problems and, as recently as yesterday, hit back at the whispering campaign that’s taking place even amongst the club’s own support.
The former Hibs man, fighting his way back to fitness after making his first-team return early in the season, posted a training video from Lennoxtown, with a “Shhh” message for the gossips.
And McGarvey insists Griffiths can get back to doing what he does best.
Speaking in the Record, he said: “He’s a fantastic finisher and a brilliant player and it’s up to him to get back and be first choice.”
“Can he come back given his problems and how long he has been out? Yes, you can always come back.
McGarvey, who had to fight for a jersey against the likes of Charlie Nicholas, George McCluskey, Brian McClair and Mo Johnston during his five-year stint, has urged Griffiths to prove he can step up.
He continued: “There’s no point in being the best centre-forward at Parkhead if you can’t go out and prove that on a weekly basis. And that’s what Leigh’s not doing at the moment unfortunately.
“I like Edouard. He’s maturing all the time and he’s coming into being a nice centre-forward. He’s a good player as well – but Griffiths has proved it.
“But you need to prove it week in week out and right now Griffiths is not doing that and Edouard is.
“So Edouard should be first choice.”
