West Brom could hijack Celtic move for £3m midfield ‘target’

Celtic could be beaten to the signing of reported transfer target Romaine Sawyers by West Brom, the club where he started his career.

West Brom are said to be interested in the Brentford midfielder with a reported deal up for grabs at £3m.

The Telegraph’s John Percy tweeted that the Baggies are interested in the Bees’ captain and are hoping to fend off interest from ‘other clubs’.

Sky Sports have now reported that an initial £2.2m bid from the side managed by Slaven Bilić has been rejected.

The St Kitts and Nevis star kicked off his career at the Hawthorns although never made a first-team appearance, before moving to west London in 2016 following a series of loans.

Celtic were said to be keen on the 27-year-old in recent weeks but with reported interest in Ecuador Under-20 star Jose Cifuentes, Neil Lennon may have decided to focus on other targets.

Defender Hatem Abd Elhamed is due to sign for Bhoys imminently, subject to a medical and work permit approval.
